A dental bridge (or tooth bridge) can help you replace a missing tooth at the back of your mouth or at the front to get the perfect smile you’ve always wanted. If you experience strain when chewing, discomfort when biting down, or have trouble speaking due to missing teeth, dental bridges can help.

Dental bridges explained
What types of dental bridges are available?
Modern dentistry offers several types of dental bridges. There are three main types of dental bridges.
TRADITIONAL FIXED BRIDGES
This is the most commonly used type of bridge and consists of two crowns that are anchoring the replacement in the middle.
RESIN BONDED BRIDGES OR MARYLAND BONDED BRIDGES
Resin bonded dental bridges are an option when the gap to be filled is in between the front teeth, and when the teeth on either side of the missing tooth do not have large fillings. The false tooth has two metal bands that are bonded to the adjacent teeth.
Cantilever bridges are mostly used for the front teeth as they are susceptible to lower stress. Cantilever bridges are used when the dentist can gain anchorage to fill the gap from one tooth only.
What are the advantages of dental bridges?
When a single tooth is lost, other teeth may shift or move. A dental bridge can help to support the teeth around the missing tooth. Leaving the space may allow teeth to drift into the space, changing the bite. This may result in a sore jaw, gum disease or tooth decay due to difficulty cleaning the teeth.
When do I need a dental bridge?
Dental bridges are recommended when there are one or more teeth missing that affect your:
- Smile and appearance
- Bite, as a result of adjacent teeth leaning into the space and altering the way the upper and lower teeth bite together
- Shape of your face
- Gum disease and tooth decay, as a result of food accumulated in the gap
What are cosmetic dental bridges?
Cosmetic dental bridges that are cosmetic can be an excellent solution because they look and feel like the natural teeth.
They are used to aesthetically eliminate the gap left by a missing tooth, using porcelain crowns which serve as anchors bridging them together.
These dental bridges can replace several teeth or just one tooth.
How much do cosmetic dental bridges cost?
Cosmetic dental bridges can range in price from $1000 to $3000 per tooth based on the aforementioned factors. Dental insurance will typically pay a percentage of the fee depending on the individual dental plan.
Payment plans are available.
What is the procedure for the placement of dental bridges?
Dental bridges, regardless of type, will generally require two visits. In your first appointment, the dentist will prepare the teeth surrounding the gap, then take an impression and place a temporary bridge.
On your next appointment, the dentist will bond your dental bridge into place.
How long do dental bridges last?
Dental bridges can last 7-15 years provided you maintain good dental hygiene and eating habits. If you exercise proper dental hygiene and visit your dentist for regular check ups, the dental bridge can last for many years.
Brushing and flossing are very important around all areas of the bridge and teeth. Interdental brushes may be of use to help maintain healthy and long lasting bridges.
