What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are possibly the most aesthetic way of creating the perfect smile.
At Randwick Dental Clinic, we offer high-quality Sydney porcelain veneers (also known as dental veneers) to help improve your natural smile.
Our skilled cosmetic dentists can use veneers to close gaps between teeth, fix broken, chipped or discoloured teeth, and reshape teeth for a more aesthetic appearance.
Strong, Durable Porcelain
A Dental porcelain veneers is a thin wafer of porcelain made to cover the front surface of the tooth, designed to mimic the natural colour and appearance of teeth.
Porcelain is a very durable material – harder than enamel – and will, therefore, be able to last for many years, avoiding decay and resisting staining.
Dental veneer only requires a minimal amount of tooth reduction, approximately 0.5 mm, and is therefore considered to be a more conservative method for tooth restoration than a crown.
‘Instant Orthodontics’ without Braces
Porcelain veneers are often referred to as ‘instant orthodontics’ as your dentist may be able to straighten your teeth in the space of 2 appointments as opposed to many years of regular orthodontics.
Planning your new smile
During the first visit, your dentist will ‘plan your smile’, discussing the different options available to best complement the shape of your face and your aesthetic desires.
We will then prepare the teeth by removing a small amount of the enamel in order to accommodate the veneers and provide a better, rougher surface for the bonding.
The dentist will take impressions of your teeth to be sent to a dental laboratory to ensure the porcelain veneers created will fit your mouth precisely. In the meantime, your dentist may suggest temporary veneers to protect your teeth.
The Insertion Visit
During the second appointment, your dentist will place the permanent veneers on your teeth to see that they fit perfectly, with an ideal shape and colour. This visit is generally longer in length while you and your dentist are required to work together, further shaping and trimming the veneers to ensure your ultimate satisfaction.
Follow up visit
Approximately one week after the placement of the dental veneers you should make another appointment with your dentist to evaluate and assess the tissue response, as well as to ask any outstanding questions that you may have.
Maintaining Your Veneers
Maintenance is fairly simple.
- Continue to brush and floss your teeth regularly
- Despite porcelain veneers being stronger than normal enamel, they have a weak tensile strength and therefore you should avoid doing anything that may twist the veneers
- Further sensitivity to hot and cold may be noticed for another couple of weeks – if this persists, contact your dentist
- If you clench/grind your teeth, inform your dentist so they may provide you with a night guard to prevent excessive stress placed on your teeth while you sleep
